10 Things in Your Home Worth Checking Regularly

Small problems in a home rarely stay small. A few minutes of checking a couple of times a year can catch issues before they become expensive repairs.

  1. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.

  2. HVAC filters. Replace them every one to three months to keep your system running efficiently.

  3. Under sinks. Look for drips, water stains, or soft cabinet floors that signal a slow leak.

  4. Water heater. Check the base for moisture or rust, and listen for popping or rumbling.

  5. GFCI outlets. Press "test" and "reset" on outlets in kitchens, baths, garages, and outdoors to make sure they still trip.

  6. Roof and gutters. From the ground, look for missing or damaged shingles. Clear gutters each spring and fall.

  7. Foundation and grading. Watch for new cracks, and make sure soil slopes away from the house.

  8. Attic and crawl space. Look for moisture, mold, pests, or daylight where it shouldn't be.

  9. Windows and doors. Check for drafts and worn weatherstripping or caulk.

  10. Dryer vent. Clean lint from the vent line, not just the trap, to reduce fire risk.

If something concerns you, don't wait. Water damage in particular gets more expensive every week it's ignored.
