What to Expect During a Home Renovation

Renovations are exciting, but living through one takes some preparation. Knowing what's coming makes the process far less stressful.
Before work starts. You'll review plans, choose materials, and set a schedule. Make your selections early, because waiting on backordered items is one of the most common causes of delays.
Demolition day. It's loud, dusty, and fast. Move valuables and fragile items out of nearby rooms, and expect some dust even with protection in place.
Surprises behind the walls. Opening walls in an older home can reveal rot, outdated wiring, or plumbing problems. A good contractor will explain what they found, what it means, and what it will cost before moving ahead.
Inspections. Many projects require inspections at key stages. They can add short pauses, but they're there to protect you.
Daily life. For a kitchen remodel, set up a temporary kitchen with a microwave, coffee maker, and folding table. Keep kids and pets away from the work area.
Communication. You should know what's happening each week and who to call with questions.
Final walkthrough. Before the job is complete, walk the space with your contractor and note anything that needs attention.
