How to Choose a Home Contractor You Can Trust

A new kitchen, an addition, or a custom home is one of the biggest investments you'll make, and the contractor you hire matters as much as the plans. Here's what to check before you sign anything.
Verify the license. West Virginia requires contractors to be licensed through the Division of Labor for most jobs, and you can check a license online in minutes. If a contractor can't give you a number, keep looking.
Ask for proof of insurance. A reputable contractor will gladly show you current liability and workers' compensation coverage. Without it, an accident on your property could become your problem.
Look at their work. Ask for photos of finished projects like yours and the names of two or three recent customers you can call.
Get it in writing. A good estimate spells out the scope, materials, timeline, and payment schedule. Be cautious of anyone who wants most of the money up front or pressures you to decide on the spot.
Notice how they communicate. Did they return your call? Did they listen, or just sell? How a contractor treats you before the job is usually how they'll treat you during it.
Ask who will run the job. You should know who is on site each day and who to call with questions.
At Patriot Custom Construction, owner Stephen oversees every project personally. Call us to talk about yours.
