Planning a Home Addition: Five Questions to Answer First

An addition can give you the space you need without leaving a home you love. Answering a few questions early makes the project smoother and helps you avoid costly changes later.

  1. What problem are you solving? More bedrooms, a bigger kitchen, a main-floor suite for an aging parent, a home office? Be specific, because the purpose shapes the size, layout, and budget.

  2. Where will it go? Building out, building up, or building over a garage each has tradeoffs. Property lines, setbacks, septic systems, and slopes can all affect what your lot allows.

  3. Can your home's systems handle it? Heating, cooling, electrical, and plumbing may need upgrades to support new space. It's better to plan for that now than discover it halfway through.

  4. How will it look from the street? A good addition looks like it was always part of the house, with matching rooflines, siding, and windows.

  5. What's your real budget? Include a cushion for surprises, especially in older homes, and decide ahead of time which features matter most if you need to trim.

Most additions also require permits, and a good contractor will handle them for you.
